Goldfish are one of the most popular pet fish in the world. Their bright orange colour and calm swimming make them a favourite for beginners and children alike. Because of movies, cartoons, and animated shows, many people believe that goldfish can happily live in small glass bowls.
But the reality is very different.
Goldfish should never be kept in fish bowls. Keeping them in bowls is one of the biggest mistakes new pet fish owners make.
And honestly, I learned this lesson the hard way.
My Personal Experience with Goldfish
Like many people, I grew up seeing goldfish in bowls in movies and cartoons. So, when I decided to get pet fish, I thought a bowl was perfectly fine. I brought home: 2 Goldfishes, 2 Guppies and 1 Water snail. All of them went into what I thought was a large fish bowl.
At that time, I was excited. It looked beautiful and peaceful. But sadly, they survived for only about one or two months. I couldn’t understand why they kept dying. I was feeding them, cleaning the bowl, and doing everything I thought was right.
That’s when I decided to start researching about proper goldfish care.
Why Fish Bowls Are Bad for Goldfish
There are several scientific reasons why fish bowls are not suitable for goldfish.
1. Fish Bowls Are Too Small: Goldfish need plenty of swimming space. They grow larger over time and require larger tanks to stay healthy. Small bowls restrict their movement and stunt their growth.
2. Low Oxygen Levels: Larger tanks have more surface area, which helps with the circulation of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the water. Fish bowls have a very small surface area, which means less oxygen for the fish to breathe.
3. Goldfish Produce a Lot of Waste: Goldfish are known for producing a large amount of waste. This waste releases ammonia, which is toxic to fish if it builds up in the water. Without proper filtration and regular maintenance, ammonia levels can rise quickly in small bowls, making the water unsafe.
4. Water Quality Is Hard to Maintain: Goldfish require stable water conditions, including- Correct pH levels, proper temperature, low ammonia and chlorine levels. Fish bowls make it extremely difficult to maintain these conditions. A filtered aquarium system helps keep the water stable and healthy.
5. Goldfish Are Social Fish: Goldfish are not meant to live alone. They enjoy the presence of other goldfish and can become stressed or depressed due to loneliness if kept alone for long periods. Providing proper companions in a large aquarium helps them live happier and healthier lives.
The Truth About Goldfish Care
During my research, I discovered something more surprising. A single goldfish needs a properly filtered fish tank with at least 75 liters of water.
Yes, 75 liters for just one goldfish.
Goldfish grow bigger than most people expect, and they require a lot of space, oxygen, and clean water to survive and stay healthy. A small fish bowl simply cannot provide these conditions.
The Right Way to Keep Goldfish
If you want to keep goldfish as pets, here are some basic guidelines:
✔ Use a minimum 75-liter aquarium for one goldfish
✔ Install a proper filtration system
✔ Maintain stable water pH and temperature
✔ Clean the tank regularly
✔ Avoid overcrowding
✔ Provide at least one companion goldfish
A properly maintained tank can help your goldfish live many healthy years.
Fun Fact: Goldfish Can Live for Decades
Many people assume that goldfish only live for a few months or a year.
But with proper care, goldfish can live for 10 to 20 years.
In fact, there was a famous goldfish named Tish who holds a Guinness World Record for living 43 years before passing away due to a short illness.
This shows that goldfish are actually long-term pets, just like dogs or cats. Unfortunately, they rarely reach this age because they are often kept in poor environments like fish bowls.
Raising Awareness About Goldfish Care
Many people lose their goldfish not because they don’t care, but because they were never taught the correct way to keep them.
I didn’t know this before. But now that I do, I want to help others avoid the same mistake.
If you know someone who keeps goldfish in a bowl, share this information with them. A little awareness can help these beautiful fish live much longer and healthier lives.
Final Thoughts
Goldfish may look small and simple, but they require proper care, space, and clean water to thrive. Keeping them in a bowl might look attractive, but it often leads to poor health and a very short lifespan.
If we truly love animals, even the smallest ones like fish, we must learn how to provide them with the right environment to live healthy lives.
If you found this helpful, share it with other pet lovers so more goldfish can live healthy lives.
